Why do I smell fuel in my renault scenic?
I get a strong smell of fuel in the cabin. The fuel lines are fine. I was told that it may be an exhaust problem. I have noticed the exhaust tip is very black (unusually so). The fuel consumption has been very poor since this has started to happen. I checked another forum and it mentioned a carbon filter under the drivers front wing but did not eleborate
Can anyone help

Hi
Has the vehicle been running badly? If so then you could have a failed coil pack which is allowing unburnt fuel to be thrown out and it is not unknown with Renaults. The emissions light usually illuminates on the dash when the coil pack fails or the emissions are out of spec.
Two more highly likely reasons are the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirc) valve being stuck open, or the O2 sensor being at fault.
You could also have a faulty ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor or a faulty MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor, or a hole or leak in the exhaust which is confusing the O2 sensor into switching low to increase the fuelling.
Either way, over fuelling is BAD because it wrecks the catalytic convertor and I would advise you not to drive the vehicle until it has been repaired. If you feel you must, then drive it to a repair facility or better still have a mobile mechanic come to you.
Cheers and all the very best
