What is the Difference between the renault engines ’1.9 DCi’ and ’1.9 DTi’?
Hi,
I am about to buy a renault scenic and I have a choice of two (both from year 2000) and I am wondering what the difference is between DTi and DCi, and whether one is better than the other. they are both 1.9 litre.
I am definitly getting one of these cars, so please don’t give me recommendations for others.
P.S. I am in the uk, I dont know whether it makes any difference to the engine, but I thought it might so I added it just in case.
any help appreciated, thanks.
the injection systems are the main difference, on the DTi engine, the injectors are supplied with fuel directly from the fuel pump. The injectors are mechanical and so they rely on the fuel pressure to lift the injector needle off its seat to allow injection to take place. There is some influence from the injection ecu, in the form of various sensor’s on the engine, such as crank angle sensor, needle lift sensor and coolant temperature sensor.
On the DCi engine the fuel is supplied to electrically controlled injectors via a common rail. This fuel system has two fuel pumps, the low pressure pump supplies fuel to a high pressure pump. This pump then supplies a fuel rail, from which the injectors are supplied with fuel. The idea is that the injection system can perform better, as the fuel pressure is maintained at a constant level and the ecu triggers the injectors when necessary. This system is controlled by the injection ecu using sensors on the engine, such as crankshaft angle sensor, camshaft sensor, coolant temperature sensor, fuel pressure sensor, etc.
the difference is the DCi has more electrical devices controlling the injection system, which is not really a bad thing. The injection timing and duration is controlled better, giving better power delivery, but maintaining fuel economy. And despite what other people may say on here it is still very reliable too.
