Mini dollhouse

(WILL and GRACE are eating lunch, while reading the apartment ads.)

WILL: $2,900 for a loft in Noho. $2,300 for a loft in Soho.

GRACE: It’s too much to pay for any… ‘ho.

WILL: Ok, here: “Charming one bedroom, Chelsea adjacent, well-maintained, $1,500.” Sounds great.

GRACE: Ok, let me decode: “Charming”? Tiny. “Chelsea adjacent”? New Jersey. “Well-maintained”? Super washes blood off sidewalk daily.

What does the public really think we mean when we write our advertisements?

Check out this “decoding” from: view article

Very quiet interior: You can barely hear the freeway with the windows shut.

Convenient to shopping: Next to a strip mall.

Convenient to freeway: Next to the onramp.

2+ bedrooms: The room in the basement isn’t a legal bedroom but, well, you know.

Seller has left you to your own imagination: Hasn’t been updated since 1940.

Great bones: You’ll need to tear it down to the studs.

Build some sweat equity: See “great bones.”

Charming: Small.

Cozy: Tiny.

Cute: Small and fussy.

Dollhouse, adorable: Nauseatingly cute.

Turnkey: Just overhauled, complete with granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances.

Unique: Remodeled by someone on acid.

Handyman special: Bring boots.

Walk to Fremont: Fremont’s 20 blocks away.

Motivated seller: They need to sell before they default on their mortgage.

Dirty, ugly, smelly: Dirty, ugly, smelly.

And Barbara Corcoran has her say here about the most misleading words in real estate (and what they really mean)

1. Cozy (too small)

2. Charming (too old)

3. Original condition (appliances are 50 years old)

4. Needs TLC (it’s a dump)

5. Conveniently located (noisy)

6. Desirable neighborhood (this little house has been way overpriced because the neighborhood has some snob appeal)

7. Efficient kitchen (too small to fit two adults)

8. One-car garage (you can drive your Chevy in, but can’t get out)

9. Peek at the park/river/mountains (if you angle your mirror just so)

10. Useable land (no trees)

11. Beachfront steal (no hurricane insurance available at any price)

12. Country living (too far from anywhere to drive to work)

13. Must see inside (outside is ugly)

14. Unique (hard to sell)

15. Just available (previous owner just died on the premises, hope you don’t mind)

Miniature doll house
Are items sold in the USA still marked Made in Taiwan? this pertains to a doll house miniature?

Label has the symbol t S interwoven into one as well as saying Made in Taiwan and I am trying to check on the vintage.

While most things imported are made in China now, I don’t know if you’ll be able to find out it’s age just going by it being made in Taiwan, I’m guessing that things are still being imported from there. Doll House miniatures became a big thing in the late 70′s – early 80′s, but I don’t think the things made then have any more value than the things made now. Most of the doll house items made in the 60′s and earlier were made for children’s doll houses and some go pretty high, especially those made by Renwal. Most things made in the 1960′s and earlier would be marked Japan.

I just searched for Taiwan in the dollhouse miniature catagory of ebay and I saw that Hello Dolly stuff was made there… I remember that from the 80′s, you can do a search and see if you find your item listed.

Dollshouse

A dolls house isn’t just a doll house – it’s a whole new world for the lucky little girls who get their own special little home. I got one when I was a sixties youngster and now that my granddaughter is old enough for her own dolls house I am back viewing that special little world.

It’s just the same – furniture built to scale that is really too big on the scale. I’ve never seen one that can fit all of the dolls house furniture into the room that it’s supposed to reside comfortably. I guess that’s part of the charm of a doll house.

It took quite an enjoyable while to choose but we bought a gorgeous wood and porcelain 7 piece bathroom set last week with Beth’s birthday money. Bath, shower cubicle, toilet, set of drawers, towel rail, mirror and basin, they looked really good even though they were in Beth’s favourite colour pink. As the bathroom walls are green Beth has decided that we need to redecorate soon.

We got home from town and got down to the serious business of furnishing the bathroom and no matter what we did we couldn’t fit all of the furniture in. After several unsuccessful attempts we decided to put the shower cubicle in the main bedroom. Beth wasn’t happy with that, she said that the bed would get wet and daddy doll wouldn’t be able to get out of bed on his own side.

She hadn’t noticed that daddy doll was too big for the bed and I wasn’t about to break that bubble!

I suggested that we leave the bath out, have a modern bathroom with only a shower. Beth said that we couldn’t do that because there would be nowhere for the children dolls to play with their boats and ducks. I saw her point if the dolls house and it’s dolls were part of the real world but you can’t help but humour 6 year old girls.

The next idea that we had was to leave out the drawers. I was surprised that we didn’t think of that in the first place it being the most logical idea. Beth took the drawers out and rearranged the rest of the furniture until she was satisfied with the result. The bathroom looked great, all it needed were the finishing touches of carpet, bathmat and towels and I knew just where I could get those.

I left Beth playing with the set of drawers – she was amazed at the drawers opening just like real world ones, but she was struggling to get anything to fit in the drawers despite trying most of her dolls clothes.

I logged onto my computer and found a website which had printable dolls house accessories. It wasn’t long before I found a pink and grey carpet that I printed onto fabric. Then I printed a pink rug onto fabric and cut it down to make a bathmat. I had a brainwave and printed another pink and grey carpet and using some elastic thread made a pair of matching curtains. I was able to fashion a couple of towels out of the leftover bits of pink rug and they didn’t look too bad.

I went back to where Beth was playing with the dollshouse and found Beth happily chattering away to her dolls as she moved them around their house.

“Oh” I said “Why have you put the drawers back in and the basin in the bath?”

“There wasn’t anywhere to put the towels” Beth replied in that logical way of hers.

I smiled to myself as we added the new soft furnishings. It didn’t matter to six year old Beth that the furniture didn’t fit, she was just happy to have her new dolls house furniture to play with in her own little world.
