Miniature dollhouse

For some people, dollhouse collecting has turned into a captivating hobby, mainly because of the intricate designs, shapes and level of detailing. However, when it comes to drawing a line between dollhouse series for children and a dollhouse that addresses adult collectors, the difference is huge. Dollhouse miniatures for adults are specifically designed for depicting the exact architectural details and constructional expertise of a real house, but at a smaller scale.

In addition, dollhouse collections include items that depict a variety of trends, contemporary styles and classic architecture, so assembling a dollhouse that depicts the Victorian period, for example, can turn into an exciting adventure.

Assembling a valuable dollhouse is a process that requires attention, patience and skills. Setting a dollhouse in a specific period is possible only if you manage to assemble it correctly. Therefore, we thought to provide dollhouse collectors with a short and handy guide on how to assemble a dollhouse:

Step 1 – Unwrapping the box

This seems like an easy task: what could be mentioned about opening the box? Well, when it comes to dollhouse items, fragility and accurate labeling are the first things you need to do when unwrapping the box.

Just write the name of each piece before you take it out of its sheet and also the sheet number. This way, when you will get to the assembling part, you’ll have every piece nicely organized for putting the dollhouse together.

You might find pieces that need light sanding before assembling, or others that were not completely die cut during the manufacturing process. Therefore, a hobby knife might come handy.

Step 2 – Choosing the right glue

Assembling a dollhouse requires collectors to learn a bit more about glue, because different types of glue are used during the different stages of assembling the dollhouse.

Wood glue is ideal for upper-grade dollhouse kits, but also for die-cut dollhouses. Remember to remove the excess glue between steps with a paintbrush.

Glue guns can be used to hold pieces that are drying. However, hot glue doesn’t work well with a dollhouse, considering the fact that is not meant for permanent applications. At one time or another, heat and cold will cause it to separate and spoil your entire work.
Before actually using the glue, it is recommended to try a dry run – you’ll have an overall view on the dollhouse and get a better understanding on the entire dollhouse concept.

Step 3 – Taking care of the details

While assembling different parts of the dollhouse, taking care of details such as the electric lights can easily turn into an independent project. Doll houses are usually lighted using simple systems based on cooper foil. Just like a roll of scotch tape, the wiring can be scrolled everywhere you want power. Electric light for dollhouse miniatures is really not expensive; it will cost you less than $25. The basic idea is that this is something easier to install during the assembling process rather than after the doll house is up.

Some collectors chose to apply a thin layer of semi-gloss paint on the wood parts of the doll house.

From this point further, the sky is the limit; anyone can personalize a dollhouse according to their personal taste or budget. Miniature dollhouse furniture and other accessories are available in local stores or over the Internet. All you have to do is look for that special doll house accessory for creating a unique piece of art.

Whether you are collecting doll houses for fun, for relaxation or for enjoying special moments with your kids, one thing is sure: doll houses are a unique way to express a person’s creativity and skill. The reward is unparallel, and the finished dollhouse is something that the entire family can enjoy.

Few things can brighten a child’s spirit more than a toy during a time of distress or illness. Whether you donate a dollhouse, a toy truck or even a stuffed animal, the smiles on their faces are priceless. Unfortunately, many people who want to give to children or children’s charities might not know the best way to go about it. All you need are a few simple guidelines to get you started.

Holiday Toy Drives

Every year during the holiday season, local newspapers and news stations begin to advertise their charity drives. Toys for Tots is one of the most popular, but Toys Not Tears and others are also dedicated to providing toys for those in need. If you have small toys to donate, they usually have drop boxes at convenient locations to make things easy. You local supermarket or post office might have a collection area where you can simply leave the toys. If you want to donate larger toys, like dollhouses or something similar, find a phone number for the organization and they can give you more detailed instructions.

One of the biggest advocates for children’s toy runs are motorcycle clubs. Every year clubs all over the country organize toy runs where the riders bring a toy in lieu of the cost of participating in the ride. Fire departments, police departments and other governmental organizations also present the community with drives of their own.

Call Your Area Hospitals

Almost every hospital has a wing set aside for pediatrics. Many times, these are kids who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness or other major medical problem. They are away from their family and they might feel depressed surrounded by equipment and dreary institutional settings. With a simple phone call to the hospital, you can find out if they will accept toy donations for the kids. You might even find out if there are some particularly lonely children that could use a “pick me up.” Try to find their age so you can donate appropriate toys that they can enjoy to the fullest.

Contact Local Churches

Churches are always in the business of giving to the needy. Not only do they give away food, they give toys and other goods to families who can’t afford to provide for their children. The church’s denomination is not important. Call one of the churches in your area and ask if they have the names of any families with small children that are less fortunate. They will be more than happy to take the toys you have and make sure they get to somebody who can use them.

For most children, toys can do things that nothing else can do. They can bring a smile to their face and provide hours of enjoyment regardless of the child’s age. With the exception of holidays, toys are an overlooked necessity for children. It’s great to donate during Christmas and other holidays, but donating throughout the year will give you a sense of satisfaction. Finding a local agency is often as simple as looking up a phone number and making a call.

Whether you’re new to collecting miniatures or you’re an old pro ready to learn more about the pursuit, the West Coast Dolls House and Miniatures Show is the place to go. Held annually in Langley, British Columbia, the show brings miniaturists together from all over Canada and beyond on the second Sunday in June.

Set up as a two-day affair, the show is designed not only to give collectors a place to buy, but also to teach them tricks of the trade. The first day of the show is reserved for a workshop series. The second is dedicated to the show and sale. During the show and sale, collectors from all over can come and purchase miniatures in many scales to help them round out their own collections. Should collectors want to learn how to do things themselves, the workshop series is worth checking out. During the series, collectors can choose to attend a number of classes that will teach them how to tackle different projects related to miniature “housekeeping.”

The workshop series does vary each year, but dollhouse enthusiasts who plan to attend the event can expect to learn such thing as:

How to create their own felted animals – Collectors who want a serious touch of realism for their dollhouses know that family pets and other animals are a must. Instructors at the show can teach others how to make their own felted miniatures, including dogs, raccoons, cats and more.
Character dolls – Ready-made dolls are nice, but it’s always more special to populate a house with homemade creations. When enthusiasts are lucky, the workshop series will include a session on how to create realistic character dolls without the need for molds.

Clothing – Period clothing is essential to keep the integrity of a dollhouse theme together. Unfortunately, many collectors don’t know how to sew or have trouble with the tiny pieces of material they must work with. During the show’s workshop series, it’s possible to learn how to make finished pieces using only a glue bottle.

Electricity – Making sure the lights are on within a dollhouse is an essential move to add realism and a sense of wonder to the setting. It is often possible for collectors to learn how to electrify their own houses during a step-by-step workshop.

Other lessons – Depending on the slate of workshop leaders, participants may also have the opportunity to learn how to make their own pieces of furniture, decorations and more.

While the workshop series is worth attending, many enthusiasts travel to Langley for the show and sale. During this part of the festivities, miniaturists from all over show off their creations and make them available for purchase. Collectors with an eye toward doing so can literally furnish their houses from top to bottom during the sale.

If you marvel at miniatures, a trip to Langley, British Columbia, will leave your jaw dropped on the floor. The annual West Coast Dolls House and Miniature Show provides a venue for miniaturists to share ideas, learn from each other and shop to their hearts’ content.
