Im trying to diagnose a fault on my 1994 renault twingo, which i think had the same engine as clio, anyway, thats not too important.
It has an idle problem which I suspect could be the idle control valve, ive taken it off and cleaned it but still no fix. Is it safe to unplug the ICV and start the car to see if it makes any difference? Im thinking that if it doesnt alter the problem then perhaps the ICV is totally broken?
If you disconnect the idle valve the engine will either cut out or the engine ecu will just operate the engine using default levels preset in its memory. It depends on what sort of idle problem you have, if it is too fast then it is more likely that there is an air leak on the inlet circuit some where, maybe a faulty gasket or a split vacuum pipe. Other possibilities are a fault sensor on the engine that is giving false or poor readings to the engine ecu. On the older shape clio with the ‘E’ type engine (1.2 and 1.4 energy engine) fitted there was an amplifier available from renault. This was plugged in line on the idle control motor circuit to amplify the ecu signals to the icv. Don’t forget if you disconnect any sensor or control unit with the engine running, this will put a fault into the ecu memory and possibly put the injection warning light on.
