My Renault Scenic Mk2 won’t start. The electronic steering column locking mechanism has stopped working.?
The steering is physically unlocked but the warning on dash when I attempt to start is ” Steering Locked”. I have tried turning the steering while holding the start button but no joy. Renault have quoted over £1000 for a new steering column unit which I can’t afford at present. Is there a fuse, relay that might have blown?? Is there a way to by-pass this problem?
It does sound like the electronic steering lock is faulty, but because it is also part of the immobiliser system i doubt you will be able to bypass it ! You can check all the fuse’s but most of the relays on the immobilser circuit will be built in to the ecu.
A £1000 sounds like quite a lot of money for a part that is held on by one left hand thread bolt !! If you look up under the dashboard you should be able to see a shiny aluminium metal box on the steering column, it can be removed by removing the 30 torx bolt (left hand thread) and because the steering lock is already released, it should come off really easily. The new one does need to be coded to the car, but that is really easy to do ! you just put the key card in and start the engine !
